Thanks FESPA, thanks Bhargav…
… What a superb moment in my life ! |

Few months back, I visited India's only one and a brand new institute for screen printing technology Dhirubhai Mistry Institute for Print Education, Research & Training near Mumbai which was set up by Grafica Flextronica, a leading manufacturer of screen printing machines and other equipments. My purpose of visit was to conduct two 3-day workshops which was well attended by over 60 people each. I am not going in detail about DMI, about its history etc.
Let me put down my own first hand experience at DMI in one sentence Most superb places I ever saw as a school and also as a place for seminars.
One of the most superb places I ever saw as a school and also as a place for seminars, |

conferences, cafeteria, workshops, and technical demonstrations! My friend Peter (Kiddell) would love it too! And most of our French and other European College envy the quality of their equipment. Every room is air-conditioned and for the printing and stenciling room with over internal air pressure to prevent the dust.
The place in itself is fantastic : more than rare are the Schools in the world with such equipment, a nice and practical frame and such a motivated group of students.
This was the “background” ! |

The purpose of my visit between December 4th and 9th, 2006 was to manage on behalf of FESPA two three days long workshop. (please read my report published else where in this magazine). These two successive workshops in this marvellous School, DMI near Mumbai, will remain a big souvenir in my « screen life » !
Thanks to Bhargav Mistry, the President of the SPAI, the Indian Association and the creator of this marvellous “Training Centre” DMI : the Dirhubai Mistry Institute, a place to train student and screenprinters from all India.

EQUIPMENTS
For the color management :
Spectrophotometer, spectroscan table Gretag/Macbeth, monitor calibration meter, software for correction of profiles, ink-jet printer fort proofing.
|
| |
For the prepress :
a lot of aluminum slop frames, a fully automatic stretching system, a fully automatic double sided coating machine, Horizontal screen dryer, exposing machine with light integrator (metal halide 5 KW), dark room, back lighted washing tank, high pressure pump.
Instruments : tension meters, emulsion thickness meter, lens and magnifiers, light table, transmission densitometer for films, mesh calculator, dot calculator, angle calculator.
For printing, curing & drying :
|
|
|
Semi-auto press, four gripper fully automatic with feeder and stacker, multipurpose dryer - UV curing system 2 lamps 120 W, IR dryer, jet-air dryer, cool air module -, racks, squeegee sharpener (diamond wheels and emery belt).
Instruments : off-contact height gauge, reflexion densitometer, magnifiers, temperature measurement strips, UV light intensity meter, shore hardness meter. At the present moment, 11 students start their third and last month of intensive training. Nothing to compare with our European courses : 8 hours of work, 6 days per week 4 days of practical training one day of pure technology - one day for high tech plants visits in different applications.
The training is so good that after only two months all the student are already « reserved » by different companies after the end of their training. The training is free of cost and there is a small hotel free too - for the student when they come from too far. Their technical level is already far superior to the one of many European students and cover the whole of the technologies of color management, prepress, stencilling and printing. |
